Cinderella, I Am Not!

I was pretty active back in school. I participated in sports, clubs, quizzes but the most memorable was being in a play, called 'Cinderella'. I didn't get that part coz my best friend did. She was fair, tall and pretty so I wasn't surprised she got the role. No, I wasn't jealous, we were best friends so I was happy for her :)

The thing is I got the role as one of the ugly sisters. I didn't want the part initially, not that I was too pretty but I was hoping to get a tiny teeny role, maybe a sweeper or something. The role of an ugly sister was quite challenging, you had to be mean, rude, loud and of course ugly... hehehe. I was the exact opposite, quiet, reserved and kept a low profile, definitely not one of the popular girls.

But I took the role as most of the casts were my classmates. They were of course supportive of everyone and made me feel less conscious. We practiced for several weeks as we'd be entering a competition. It was tough as I had to speak and look evil to my best friend. It didn't help when the boys kept mocking me for acting more like a good sister and looked terrified instead of evil!

One of the things I remember is having to put on heavy make up, I mean really heavy make up. My lipstick was bright, ugly red, with striking eye shadows and really silly costume. I wore my mom's sarong and for the life of me, I can't remember the blouse I wore... it must have been too ugly that my brain refused to remember it!! Imagine being in a Cinderella play and I was wearing a sarong! LOL

If only we had the kinds of renaissance costumes and accessories like the ones available at The Renaissance Store, I would have definitely looked great, even if I was just the ugly step sister of Cinderella. We didn't win, but we sure had loads of fun :) And how could I ever forget this song...

I remember when we were in high school, my friends and I were so active (everything from choir, to choral, sports [that would be handball, hockey and netball!] and just being onstage for every possib;e reason!) that our principal actually made a comment about it during one of the weekly assemblies.

"Cikgu tidak mau tingu muka muka yang sama sija dalam semua aktiviti. Bagi peluang sama pelajar yang lain."

But everything was based on try outs! It just so happened that we were chosen for almost all we went to! *chuckles*

I think you wore one of our sister's blouse to go with the sarong. LOL!

  4. Now that's a weird but cute song! :D I was in many plays at school too. My best play would be the one I wrote for my group during our form 6 orientation.. I played a "makcik" in a sarong and our group won!! :D

  5. You were in a play, cool? I never took part in many activities in school. I was a lazy bum who preferred to head home and sleep. Besides, I don't think I could remember any of my lines even if I was interested in any plays ... hehehe ...

  9. Haizum - It was the same in our school, normally you'd find the same group of active students in all other activities. Some would see it as a monopoly or favoritism but like you said, it was all based on try outs and abilities.

This reminds me of an incident in my class where he/she claimed (I have no idea who he/she is) the class teacher favored certain students in the class. How that even came up puzzled me. A case of jealousy I suppose :) Haiyah, school time, banyak drama la... hehehe

  10. Queen Bee - Oh, I was shy too. My best friend gave all the support I needed, if she wasn't in the play I don't think I'd have the courage to do it. Orang bilang kalau pemalu, make friends with the brave, their braveness will rub on you eventually :)

  11. Ann - Reali? Great?? Wah, I didn't know that! LOL Yeah, the story was comedy-like, I wished someone had taped it. I don't even have a picture of it, a pity ya.

I really don't recall the blouse... I'm getting old la sis!

  12. Cindy - If I'm not mistaken, the fairy Godmother sang this to turn Cinderella into a beautiful girl and the pumpkin into a carriage.

Wah, you were a story writer! Hebatnya :D I think I've played a 'makcik' a few times too, and once a 'nenek kebayan'... LOL!

  13. Nick - Well, that's definitely better than bumming off to the shopping complexes and mixing around with bad hats ya.

Aiyah, put that girl with 'the legs' in any plays, I'm sure you can do anything! LOL

  14. Marzie - Hey, what do you know, another evil sister in the house! :D

I'm eyeing the apartment now, but still a loooong way to go. I tried to 'beat' your FB house but it's strong too, I think I managed to win twice only.

  15. Crystal - Wah, so deep la your drama. Ya, that kind of story is hard to act. Tapi best juga kan bila teringat balik :)

My favorite has to be our dance performance (the Waltz)... best sebab inda payah ingat lines, just the steps and it was so much fun!!

  18. Angie - It was our teachers' idea. I didn't like the idea of wearing a sarong, pretty silly but they said the ugly sisters were supposed to look silly! :)

Oh, I've pulled so many acts (to save my butt) towards my family too. That Cinderella play was my one and only, it was nerve wrecking having to act in front of an audience. There is no way I'd act again... well, unless they pay me a million bucks of course! LOL
