One thing I noticed about living in the city is the lack of noise (animal noise to be specific) and the smell of morning. All you hear are cars zooming by, horns honking (newspaper man and gas man) and the occasional dog barks and cat fights coupled with the exhaust fumes of cars stuck in traffic.
I miss the sounds of my kampung (village). I miss going to sleep to the sounds of crickets and waking up to the crowing of cockerels. Not forgetting the thin, cool mist enveloping the surrounding hills :)
It's normal for kampung folks to rear chickens, even pigs near their houses. My late mom used to rear a few chickens too and even though they have their own coops, she'd let them out occasionally to gallivant a little. Chickens need their freedom too I guess. But the pigs would be kept in their sty cos they tend to roam very far and get lost and there was a good chance that they may get stolen and eaten by some unscrupulous people out there.
Now, though these chickens were free to roam the ample yard but they just seemed to love shitting (pardon the language) on the cement floor of our house. Our house has 2 floors, the ground floor consist of an open area where my dad could park his car, a basic kitchen, a toilet and bath and 2 small bedrooms.
Those of you who doesn't have any experience with chickens, well, let me tell you something. Chickens basically have two types of shit (pardon me again), the hard type and the watery type. Now, the hard ones are easier to clean but the watery ones, eeeww... you have to wash them instantly cos when they dry up, it gets really difficult to clean them.
I would normally chase away the chickens using a long thin bamboo rod (humbising) but after a while they keep coming back. So it was a never ending process of shooing the chickens, cleaning up their poo and the occasional burst of expletives when you accidentally stepped on their poo. I got so mad one day that I complained to my mom and she kept the chickens in their coop from then on. I don't know if she was mad but I just couldn't keep up with the chickens and their non-stop pooing!
I remember going back home last year and my son was so intrigued seeing the neighbor's chickens in our yard. He kept looking at it as it fed on the grass and clawed the ground for food. And when your son is fascinated by chickens eating and walking around the yard, that's when you know your little boy has become a full fledge city boy!
On to a slightly similar subject, I'd like to talk about Asian Chicks, I know some guys fancy Asian girls. Why not give this chat room a try, who knows, you may get lucky with a chicken... opps, I mean chick or two! :D
Thank god we don't have chickens roaming around this neighbourhood. The cat shit is more than I can stand and I'll go crazy if I had to avoid chicken crap too ... LOL!
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, that's what this place is missing, the wonderful and serene sounds and smells of the country. I liked the way you linked the opp though ... hahaha ...
Yeah... the city just doesn't have that uumph. I really love waking up at a kampung especially if it's right by the ocean. So peaceful.

During the holidays, I get fresh air and good ole kampung life in Sandakan. :D And we DO live in a kampung. The kind where everybody knows everybody and mosquitoes are everywhere cause we live right next to the bakau.
Speaking of chickens, berbunyi-bunyi suda tu ayam while I'm reading your blog. It's only 2AM!!
ReplyDeleteMy grandparents used to rear chickens and pigs to. I'm more lucky compared to you because I get to visit my late grandparents house almost every day. So the sight of chickens are common. I love my kampung! =)
ReplyDeleteCan't deny it Nessa. Kampung is very nice is one side, by there are other things we need to seek in the city. So, lets balance it. Balik kampung when cuti.. :)
