People always tell me swimming is so easy to learn. Uh huh... tell that to a person who almost drowned when she was a kid. I just can't do it. I am terrified of water. I have that phobia, errr... what's the term? Yeah, aquaphobia.
At swimming pools it's so easy to find me. I'd be using a float hanging on to dear life to the pool's ladder. Or at the kiddie section... hahaha. It's no laughing matter though cos I know I'd be safe there. But swimming is reputed to be one good form of exercise and even more so if you're expecting. I know a few blogger friends who are expecting so I'd like to share the following article with them.
Keeping Fit While Pregnant: Walking And Swimming Through The Trimesters
Exercising while you're expecting is important for a number of reasons. You'll sleep better, avoid fatigue, and enjoy an easier pregnancy. There are many types of activities you can do to stay in shape as a mother-to-be. Among them, walking and swimming are ideal. Both are cardiovascular, which means they will improve your body's use of oxygen; that's good for both you and your little one. Plus, both are low-impact. You'll enjoy developing muscle tone and keeping excess weight off while avoiding putting undue stress on your joints. Below, we'll provide some tips that you can use to walk and swim to stay fit throughout your pregnancy.
The First Three Months
If you don't normally exercise, start slowly. It's less exerting to swim, so you can safely do so for a half hour each day. A lot of moms-to-be enjoy doing it in the morning because the weightless sensation of being in the water helps to curb nausea. Plus, working out in the morning gives you an energetic boost to get through the rest of the day.
When you walk during your first trimester, you'll need to take more care, especially if you're doing so in the sun. Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and have plenty of drinking water available. wear loose fitting maternity clothes or extra comfort. If your body suffers dehydration, it can trigger contractions. If you rarely exercised before getting pregnant, start with a 20-minute lazy stroll. Then, increase your speed as your body grows accustomed to the activity.
The Second Three Months
When month four arrives, you won't need to make any modification to your workout in the pool (besides wearing a larger Maternity Swimsuit). Swimming is uniquely easy on your body. So, unless your normal swim from the first trimester is causing exhaustion, keep it up. Walking during your second trimester can be dangerous if you're not careful. At this point, your balance and equilibrium will shift slightly. To counteract this change, walk with your back straight, tuck your hips to prevent unnecessary swaying, and swing your arms as balancing weights. Pay attention to where you're walking. You may have been able to recover gracefully from a stumble before getting pregnant, but your lack of balance now can be dangerous.
The Final Three Months
Not only is swimming easy on your joints, but as you round the corner on your third trimester, it can also control your body heat. Breaststroke is particularly valuable because it lengthens the muscles in your chest. To alleviate the pressure from bobbing or turning to breathe, consider using a snorkel.
Because walking increases your body heat, you'll need to be extra careful during the third trimester. Consider taking walks in an air-conditioned gym or nearby mall. Also, speak with your obstetrician to make sure your workout doesn't pose a danger to your baby during the final lap of your pregnancy. Exercise should be considered a vital part of your daily routine from the beginning of your pregnancy through childbirth. Add swimming and walking to your workout to stay fit and energized.
I'm not a good swimmer myself. I can float and I can swim a little, but with my head submerged in the water. LOL!

ReplyDeleteWhile I know how to swim, I'm not really a 'water person' either. I like looking at water from afar...
ReplyDeletebtw, your new blog layout is fabulous :)
don't feel bad Nessa, I can't swim either. I had a similar expereince when I was a kid and I'm not deathly afraid of the water but I'm not a huge fan of it either.
ReplyDeleteLove the new look of your blog. Have a great day
My mom can not swim either, Nessa...for the same reason.
ReplyDeleteI almost drowned as well when I was little but some how I was able to work through that and love swimming! :) Blog looks so cute, btw!
Nice layout Neesa!
ReplyDeletebtw, I can't swim too,..but I'm good in tenggelam..hehe..
I also have the same fear of the water as you do. I took swimming lessons for two years, and never learned to swim well. I did learn to not be quite so afraid though, but not much. I mostly stay away from deep water.
ReplyDeleteMarzie ~ Itulah, not pro la dis HTML coding and all.
ReplyDeleteWow, B swims like fish! I oso jeles la... bestnyer can swim like dat. They make it look so easy kan... for me, when the water sudah paras dada, aiyoh, I panic oredi.
Duni ~ I think I want to swim the whole day if I knew how to swim! I'd probably end up looking like a fish! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Duni :)
Ann ~ I only feel bad when everyone is in the pool having a jolly time and I'm left alone at the side :*(
ReplyDeleteAnd you'll never know when someone just throws you into the water... not knowing you can't swim. *touchwood*
Thanks, Ann! You have a great day too.
Tanyia ~ Good for you. I'm envious! I did try a few times but my body just automatically freezes in deep water! Thanks :D
ReplyDeleteyeah I enjoyed walking a lot in the park during my pregnancy but I didn't go for swimming that time coz need to buy another swim suit which can't be used after delivered.
ReplyDeleteNia ~ Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteTenggelam kejap takpe... takut nanti tak timbul! Hehe
Ratty ~ Yeah, it is safer by staying away from deep water. There's always the kiddie pool... hehe
ReplyDeleteReally thought about swimming too. Perhaps I will ask my hb to teach me a thing or two about that.
ReplyDeleteDora ~ I was so lazy to exercise then... even now. That's why I keep getting bigger and chubbier :*(
ReplyDeleteHi Blogresepi.com! Welcome to Mumblings :)
ReplyDeleteIt would be easier if you don't have any phobia. Good luck to you and thanks for dropping by!
ahmen to this! I swam through out my pregnancy and felt great! I was able to work, until my water broke, (this was a choice. I didn't need or have to work throughout but continued to work part time to stay active. I felt great had a good delivery.
ReplyDeleteStay active, folks!
Nessa I love the new look.
Olla Nessa,
ReplyDeleteTerima Kasih untuk ucapan selamat hari raya aidil adha hari tu.
Eh!
LoL
Philly5113 ~ I couldn't swim so unfortunately I didn't do any swimming exercise then. I'm trying to keep myself active though.
ReplyDeleteStaying online for too long and watching too much TV ain't good for the body especially now that I'm heading towards that big four-zero.
Your welcome, Rizal :)
ReplyDeleteFloating pun best jugak but I don think I can float without the 'donut' thingy... hehe
Inilah pestaim dengar berenang gaya anjing! LOL! Selalu gaya bebas, kuak lentang, kupu-kupu, dada... ada lagi ke?
Kat sungai lagi la I phobia sebab kat situ la I nyaris2 lemas masa I kecik dulu... tapi bermain pasir kat tepi2 tu boleh la.
