Those School Girl Days...

A week ago, I attended my elder son's school sports day. It was held on a Sunday (of all days) at the sports complex nearby. Oh and before I go further, let me proudly say that my son got a bronze medal for coming in 3rd in the 100m dash :D I'm so proud of him. I think most of you know he's in a special class and getting 3rd was a big achievement for him. I cheered like a mad woman when he was running... hehehe

Now, that was about the only highlight of the day cos the rest of it was an utter bore. I mean, what kind of sports day was it that had only running events and nothing else! No long jump, no tug of war, no hurdles, etc, etc, etc. Even the march past was an absolutely uninteresting with just a few participants in each house. And there was no other activities or shows to entertain the parents who were there, in fact more than half the school kids didn't even turn up. They didn't even have huts for the respective houses! Such a disappointment...

I remember back in my days, we took such great pride in our sports day and we'd all turn up and decorate our respective house huts (we were lucky having lots of bamboo trees near our school back then) and all of us would take part in the march pass decked in our full regalia of house colors (which we designed ourselves). We'd even have pom-pom girls to make the atmosphere more happening. We even have song requests! And we'd all HAVE to attend the sports day cos it was regarded as a school day. Gee, I sure miss those days.

The best part was being able to skip classes to build our huts. Some would weave palm leaves to make the roofs, others build walls, while the rest decorates to outdo the other huts cos there would be a competition on the best decorated/designed huts. It taught us the meaning of team-work and having responsibilities. Of course, some would take advantage of the situation to go dating but I guess that's only normal for teens : D

I'm a little bit saddened that the schools and even the children nowadays don't take all that much pride in their sports day. After my sons 100m dash, I was practically bored and finally decided to go home early cos there really was no point staying there at all. The only one who had the most fun was my younger boy who was running all over the place and wanting to buy drinks and pizza (yes, they had a stall selling pizza, which was the only food stall mind you!).

And he wasn't satisfied with just one. And when I told him I didn't bring along enough cash, he just looked at me with this disappointed look and said, 'use your credit card mommy!' Like as if I don't have enough problems with my credit card already and he expects me to spend more with it. And that was really when I decided we needed to leave or I'd probably need some Online Credit Card Help soon! :D

  1. Ahhh, those were the days. I used to love Sports days during my time. Yeah, I remember the huts and all that too. I was in yellow house which later was renamed to Harimau (tiger). I even took part in the cross country event a few times. I came from and all boys school and we didn't have no pom-pom girls though, that would have made it more fun, that's for sure ... LOL!

  4. Hi Nessa :) Congratulations that your son won the bronze medal :) Also back in my days, we took such great pride in our sport activities. Each team had a "godmother" who would be dressed like a princess and carrying flowers...it was such an exciting day :)

  6. Nick - Oh ya, we had cross country too. It was tiring. Those who completed the run contribute one point for their respective houses. No pom-pom girls? That's a pity. Pom-pom boys would have been interesting too... hehe

  7. Syura - I was in Yellow house for as long as I can remember! They used to call it Lincoln instead of Yellow those days.

Ya, sports day during our 'time' sure was happening kan :D Even the sports outfits were proper, you won't see anyone running in track bottoms!

  8. It's been ages since I've left school but I can still remember my sports days. You're right, it really isn't now as fun as back then. I used to look forward to it. It was fun cheering your house to victory and my house ALWAYS were champions in the end :D

  18. hey nessa! As Syura said, your sports day seemed a whole lot like ours. I wasn't athletic at all but boy I can really shout!! And almost ALL of my friends were athletes so they depended on me to use my voice for support! I didn't need a megaphone and they can hear me all the way across the field! LOL! Those were the days.

Now, I've gained a reputation for "the loud cheering" at my younger sis's school. hahaha..

Maybe if I dig through the pics, I might be able to find a pic of the hut that we built, and maybe post it up in my blog! :)

Btw, congrats to your boy for getting a medal!!! I would cheer him on anytime!!

Thanks! Mommies are the best 'kaki sorak'.. hehehe
