This is a continuation of my adventure back home. Well, not really an adventure... coz this time you'll get to learn how to make edible hats. Yeah, you read that correct... edible hats or sombrero . I believe this kueh (local cake) can only be found in Sabah. The locals call it Kueh Penjaram or Sinisiung.
My mom used to make these, she used to sell them at church after the Sunday morning mass. But now my 2nd sis (I have 4 sisters by the way) has inherited the skill of making it. I've seen my mom making these countless times but I never bothered to learn...
It is believed that one cannot be too noisy when making these kueh or else the hats won't turn out nice. I've witnessed so many ruined kueh, they may taste the same but the shapes are distorted. So, they may be some truths to the taboo.
Kueh Penjaram is best eaten with a cup of steaming coffee!
They sure look like Sombreros alright..... hehehehee. What do they taste like? Sweet? Salty? Savoury?
ReplyDeletemesti sedap sangat.. cos ur son is holding 2 and trying to fit both in his mouth.. hehe.. oh ya.. izit sweet? or salty? as Mat Dingo asked?
ReplyDeletepenjarammmmmm...aduii nessa, mlm2 gini tinguk tu penjaram and then baca lagi ko cerita psl makan sm kupi o...slurpppppp...tarik air liur sia oh...
ReplyDeleteNessa!! I pun suka kuih ni! Dekat kampung i, nama kuih ni kaki pelita!
ReplyDeleteWow! Make me hungry and do you make them again Nessa.
ReplyDeleteI drive up to your house and grab some OK:)
Mmmmmmmmm tengah diet (it seems!) ni but ur sombrero looks so yum la Nessa! How did u get it to have the design kat tepi tu? Macam currypuff pie!
ReplyDeleteI can imagine how it tastes la, sweet and fluffy gitu and with black coffee...divine!
ReplyDeleteThey look delicious!
ReplyDeleteHi Nessa, I have a special award, for you, CONGRATS! :)
ReplyDeleteMat Dingo ~ They're sweet. There's another version... it's green in color cos it's mixed with pandan (screwpine leaves) juice.
ReplyDeleteAnny ~ It's sweet as you Anny... hehe. It's normally bigger in size, these are smaller actually but they look so cute, like little hats :D
ReplyDeleteCarol ~ Sia punya feveret yang siring2 dia... yang tebal di middle sia slalu bagi sister sia makan! LOL! Memang sadap ba kalau makan sama kupi O.
ReplyDeleteEmila ~ Yeker?! Ada kat sini jugak? Wah, mana kampung you Emila... I nak beli la! :D Kaki pelita, pestaim dengar nama kueh tu.
ReplyDeleteYoon See ~ My sis made these. Unfortunately, I don't even know the proper ingredients and mixture. I tried making them once but it turned out horrible! :(
ReplyDeleteMarzie ~ The design come out naturally. You just pour the mixture in the hot oil, after the kueh kembang sikit you flip it and voila, the renda2 ada oredi... like magic!
ReplyDeletePenny ~ Hi Penny! :)
ReplyDeleteThey're pretty sweet but one can always adjust the sweetness. But then, if it's not sweet, the kueh won't come out nice.
Marzie ~ It's not reali the best kueh for dieters... cos it's kinda oily and very sweet. But it is just divine having it with black steaming coffee!!
ReplyDeleteMarzie ~ Thanks so much for the cool award dear :) Wah, I'm over the top some more! Haha
ReplyDeleteoh...... now i know.. its like the green ones we have here.. its berry sweet :) come make some for us all here to eat la :D
ReplyDeleteAnny ~ You mean you oso have kueh penjaram there?
ReplyDeleteI didn't make these Anny. My sis prepared the mixture earlier.
The ingredients are tepung beras, brown sugar and kicap (if I'm not mistaken). The tricky part is how much water to put in the mixture. Too watery memang tak jadi la hats... too thick pon lagi la jadi.
Cute looking cake :D And they do look like Sombreros, maybe it originally came from Mexico? LOL!
ReplyDeletehaha..me also like to eat yang d tepi2..rangup..hehe..btw, did they use kicap? if i'm not mistaken, the ingredients are tepung beras and gula melaka..but maybe lain orang lain cara kan..hehe ;)
ReplyDeleteWah sedap nye sombrero sombrero itu, but the expression of the "model" before the end of the post is priceless. Muka dia memang muka "marilah menjamu topi"
ReplyDeleteI miss the Penjaram.....ah...wish my sister could send it to me...!

ReplyDeleteCakap pasal panjaram pulak kamu ni kan hehe... Sya pun cam ko, suka makan di siring2 tapi yang di tengah pun abis jugak la haha... Yang pandan pun sadap kan. :) Tapun! Jess ~ Hi Jess! Welcome to Mumblings :)
ReplyDeleteUFO kuih? LOL!
There's no mould to make this kueh back home. Just pour the batter in the hot oil and the kueh turns out that way. It's a cool sight seeing it 'transforming' :)
