I read with horror today in 'The Star' website. The National Seminar on Education Regulations (student Discipline) has passed a resolution to cane female students in schools. I thought we have progressed but why do we resort to cave-man like actions?
I remember an incident at school, I was just 15 at the time. My classmate (a boy) was caned for flouting the school rules, I didn't know what it was. He was caned a few times in front of all the students. I could never forget that incident, even though he was naughty but I don't think he deserved the humiliation.
Caning a female student is just unacceptable. What if she was wrongly accused of something? Is the government prepared to be sued millions of Ringgit? There are so many other issues they should tackle. To come up with caning female students is just plain crazy.
There are other ways to punish students. Using pain and humiliation are not the way to do it. What's your opinion on this? Are you for it or against it?

i agree with you all the way, i think humiliating students is the worst punishment there is, there are alot of different ways to do it, even positive ways, ways that will deliver the message and wont do the opposite like making the student hate the system even more.
ReplyDeleteIm with you.
I'm TOTALLY against caning! I clearly remember the time I was caned on my first day of school in Tawau for not being able to read in Malay! How was I supposed to read when I couldn't even speak the language! I only knew how to speak AND read English! Soooo stupid la the teacher! And for that, she caned both my hands. 5 times on each side! I hate her until now! Oh, and I was 8 years old!!
ReplyDeleteI was so traumatized to experience that especially after being from a school that encourages show and tells, field trips and happy fun stuff! Caning is not for students. I only encourage caning for rapists!
Okay, I'm gonna go to bed and cry now. See how it affects kids?
Against caning la of course, there are so many other effective means of punishing a student. Caning will not solve anything. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with you! I think this will not resolve the matter but it will make matters worst! The child will grow up to be a hater or something negative in the end! Totally against it!
ReplyDeleteWhy not they practise the "Do unto others as you would have them do to you" princip!
Hmmm, I'm in two minds about this. On one hand, the very prospect of being caned for something would instill a little more discipline in the students. I mean, if they toe the line they won't get caned, etc, etc, etc, thus making them have a little more respect for the authority and rules and regulations, God knows how many people out there who have no regards for the authorities at all (that's also in big part to the authorities themselves but we're not talking about those bunch of idiots now are we?).
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, it is a humiliating means of punishment. I mean I wouldn't want to be caned in public cos of the impression it would give to those who are watching you get caned. No matter what you do later in school, you're always a bad person cos you've been caned before. And also the lastings scars it would cause the person who got caned.
So, I'm still in two minds about this, but my suggestion would be finding a less humiliating means of disciplining the child.
Caning for discipline?! Especially for kids today?! They are more rebellious group of people than our time because they 'grew up' faster with these days social upbringing. Caning would probably make things worst!! Thus, they should tackle this matter with different methods.
ReplyDeleteHmm.. I don't know, but I'd say Yes to caning: but NOT to the extent of humiliating the child. When you look at the children these days, they are more daring and rebellious compared to the children of our time. So perhaps caning is a way of disciplining them.
ReplyDeleteThat's 6 to 1 folks...keep your opinions coming! :)
ReplyDeleteI amn favour of caning. I was severly caned on my bare buttocks when 12 years old for spying on the girls changing rooms and touching up a classmate. It was very humiliating, not least becase I went to the toilet during the caning. Thirty years later, however, I realise that the caning kept me on the straight and narrow and I am grateful for it.
